The nuclear nail biter reaches a climax with just 24 hours left for the US Congress session to end. The US Congress has postponed the much anticipated vote, making the next 24 hours extremely crucial. If the deal is not passed in the current session, all hopes will rest on a lame duck session that may be held after the November Presidential elections. However, the biggest critic of the deal, Congressman Howard Berman, is now a supporter, though he did try to stall things by introducing a killer bill.
Here is a verbatim transcript of Prerna Kumar’s comments on CNBC-TV18.
Vocal critic of the deal, Congressman Howard Berman has actually gone ahead and introduced the India nuclear legislation on the floor of the house. We were expecting a vote shortly thereafter. But as the most important meeting between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and President George Bush began here in the evening, we learned that the house was not able to accommodate the Indian nuclear legislation due to several other domestic matters that the house was taking care of. Also, there was not enough space on the legislative calendar.
So, the biggest factor right now is time––that single day before the legislative calendar ends. We have been able to confirm from Congressman Berman’s office that they will reintroduce the bill tomorrow; we are expecting them to hold a debate after which a vote is expected.
What will happen in the Senate is another story because the Senate also has to approve this legislation and there is no word from the majority leader in the Senate whether or not he is planning to schedule a vote on Friday.
